My Grandmother’s 1977 AMC Pacer D/L
My grandmother, Orea Haydon, purchased this car in 1977 from the showroom floor of the local AMC dealership, Alaska Motors on 17th & Cushman, in Fairbanks, Alaska. My grandmother enjoyed this car very much. She drove it back and forth from her home on Badger Road in North Pole, Alaska, to her job in Fairbanks. This drive was fourteen miles one way on the highway. She also drove it to church every Sunday. However, in the winter, my grandparents would go to church in my grandfather’s truck, leaving the Pacer parked in the garage. The fellows at the shop got to know my grandmother quite well, as she took excellent care of her vehicle. She had the oil changed every 3,000 miles, and diligently took her car back to the shop whenever she heard any kind of a squeak or rattle. She would relentlessly investigate the matter until the cause of the noise could be discovered.
In the late 1980’s, my grandmother bought a new Dodge Dynasty, and stopped driving the Pacer on a regular basis. Once or twice a year, she would drive the Pacer and have the fluids changed. Basically, the car was stored in a heated garage with a car cover over it for about fifteen years.
A year ago, my wife and I purchased the Pacer from my grandmother when she was getting ready to move to the lower 48 states. Driving the Pacer has been quite fun, especially when we receive surprised looks from people who are impressed by the Pacer’s excellent condition. The climate here in interior Alaska, where the car has been kept since 1977, has been helpful in maintaining its condition. The climate is dry, as we are far from the ocean. Salt is not used on the roads in the winter. Subsequently, very little rust, if any, can be found on the body of the Pacer. My grandmother, who took such good care of her car, probably never drove it over 75 mph. I’m hoping to sell this vehicle to someone who can afford to store it in a manner that will allow it to be enjoyed for many years to come. The minimum bid for this car is $25,000. We are willing to split the shipping costs 50/50 to anywhere on the west coast. If you do not believe that this car is worth the minimum bid, then consider the current value of the Ford Edsel.
