Dear AMC Fans, Anyone has a 1976 Pacer X AUTO TRANSMISSION for sale? Unfortunately mine just went out on me today. I'm desperately looking around for options before I go to a generic transmission place for a rebuild job. Please help, or recommend a place to go to get it done (rebuild / in stock). Thanks!! All AMCs used the same types of automatic transmissions, so within a range of years (and same engine type), they are all interchangeable (except the 4WD Eagle, which had a transfer case attached to the rear). The automatics were manufactured for AMC by Chrysler Corporation and were based on the Chrysler A-904 design, but with a bellhousing integrated to the transmission case that is unique to AMC. The internals are standard 904 parts, so any generic transmission shop should be able to rebuild yours. A junkyard transmission from any mid-70s to '80s 2-wd AMC should fit, but may not be in any better shape than yours.
Note that the transmission for a 232 will likely use fewer friction plates than one for a 258, so a replacement from a 258 (4.2L) car is preferable.
