hey pacer peeps quick question- has anyone else ever had an issue with a leaky distributor cap? my baby keeps dying just when its raining, but you just kick into neutral and turn the key and she starts right up again, i am told its a common issue with pacers. there are no amc 'specialists' in my area and not alot of people will touch her. i just was wondering if this happened to anyone else and what they did to remedy it (other then not driving in the rain which is impossible here) i'm anxious to see what you guys have to say. thanks katy

ok it happened 9 times today despite covering the distibutor in silicone spray and it was a very dry sunny day. i'm starting to believe the issue is electrical. does anyone know any good amc mechanics in ny, conn, pa or nj or vt?

Your problem would seem to me from the syptoms .. the computer brain box on the fender-well $39 or so. the heat or temp change effects the swelling of old cast/alum boxes or a chassis short when this happens,, we used to move the box to a more aired area or drill holes behind the mouting to get air around the box... also check the factory plastic connections for green corriorision in the blade connections..

this makes perfect sense! but where would you move the box? lengthening the wire could just create more problems right? i appreciate your response as i was at a loss with this

In this case,, we are limited to a "move" of the box,, but since it took 20+ years to get bad, just add a new box and with todays technology the box should be better to withstand the elements.. The example in other email was on a Matador 1976 it had the same symptoms.. the brain box solved that problem,, it would stop at every corner or less, I was always able to pull off somewhere to wait awhile then it always restarted.

Thanks! the box just needed to be cleaned out and the wire tape had turned to dust with age. found 2 old rhode island state lotto tickets covering the board. weird. but she's running like new. thanks so much, you probably saved me a couple hundred bucks
