I just tried to use a lower V8 oil-assy with the timming cover on a 72 -304. It dont work, it don't come near matching the oil port holes in the cover,, it bolted on,, but no pressure is able to build- up due to mis matched ports, so unless AMC changed the holes in the later; say 77 up ,then if you swap out a V8 you'll need the ENTIRE 304 PACER timming cover. or do like I did - use the remote oil relocator kit(aftermarket). I alway heard you had to have at LEAST the lower assy to make it all work, mine was stored for several years before the project actually got going then I find out when trying to prime the oil before first start up.. Any body ever had the same thing happen,? I checked the TSM the pics show the round & square ports, but the Pacer is like a peanut shaped.? thanks... Phil a

I think they must have changed it because my dad and I just installed a 78 401 in our car with the original timing cover and the pacer stuff on the bottom. No problem

So that means the lower oil assy from a 72 -304 Javelin wont fit a 78? if your lower assy worked on the 78,,,!!! The oil ports are square and round on the early lower assy,, on the Pacer assy its like a peanut twisted or grub worm passages they dont mate to any except another Pacer timming chain cover or ELSE the later ones are changed,, thus making the early /late non compatible. Didnt we(amcers) all think they were the same from 66 -91. ?
